"The inability, the reluctance, the difficulty of seeing enslaved individuals always struck me as a problem, and I think it's a legacy of slavery: the way that carries over to the way people see Blacks today...[We need] to have empathy [for] people, instead of pity - pity is putting someone 'over there'; empathy [establishes] a connection that allows you to think of that person as something like yourself.
And once you do that, it becomes difficult to treat that person in ways that you would not like to be treated."
